As we get closer to the end of the regular season, Virginia Beach United will play its last game tomorrow night, July 13th, on the road against North Carolina Fusion U23.

Who’s on the Other Side?

North Carolina Fusion (7-4-2) is currently number two in the South Atlantic Division standings with 23 points. They managed to get to that spot by having a strong defense, the best in the league so far, who has conceded 18 goals.

Besides having a good defense, Fusion also counts on dangerous players such as Faisal Almubaslat and Cameron Joice. Almubaslat has scored six goals and helped with an assist, while Joice scored four times and collected three assists. One of Joice’s assists was against VBU on June 15th when VB United won 3-2 at Virginia Beach Sportsplex; so those are definitely players Virginia Beach will have to mark closely in order to earn three more points.

What Do We Have?

The two players who have been consistently helping VBU in its inaugural season are Donnett Sackie and Gui Leme. Sackie is still the team’s leader in goals (7) and is followed by Leme who has four, the last one scored last Tuesday against Wake FC.

When playing together, Sackie and Leme have shown good chemistry, working combinations in the opponents’ final third and creating scoring opportunities for VBU in many games this season. That’s what they will try to do one last time to cap the 2019 regular season in the USL League Two.

What’s at Stake?

Unfortunately, Virginia Beach United doesn’t have a chance to win the regular season since they have 20 points and one game left, and North Carolina FC has 24 points in the first position. However, VBU will play its last game and try to ruin Fusion’s plans to win the league. If VB United wins tomorrow, they will finish second in the South Atlantic Division with 23 points and close a great first season in the club’s history in its year of foundation led by coach Matt Ellinger.
