Virginia Beach United falls to Wake FC 2-1 Tuesday night in United’s final home game of the 2019 season. The match was filled with officiating controversy from the first pass to the final whistle. Still, VB United had several chances but were just unable to convert.
The first half was filled with competitive play from both teams. VBU played hard, but never quite seemed to settle into the match and find their groove. In the 15th minute, VBU’s keeper Oliver Padilla made an incredible diving save, knocking the ball out for a Wake corner kick. Unfortunately for VBU, Wake was able to connect with the ball off the corner to open the scoring in the 16th minute. VB United had numerous offensive possessions but the remainder of the half was riddled with offside calls against VBU.
VBU came out of the locker room with a sense of urgency to start the second half. In the 53rd minute, Luis Martinez received a through ball in a 1v1 position against Wake’s keeper but was unable to find his way past the goalie. VBU’s goal didn’t come until the 63rd minute. Zach Toms showed an outstanding display of individual skill by nutmegging one of Wake’s defenders. He then played Luis Garza who found Gui Leme in front of the goal. Gui took a touch and slotted the ball right past the keeper to tie the game at one. As time ran down, VB United started to put more numbers forward which opened the opportunity for Wake to find a final goal in the 90th minute to finish the game.
Virginia Beach United will look to end their season with a win at their final game against North Carolina Fusion U23. VBU’s chances to make it to post-season look slim after this loss but the team can definitely hold their head high after a fantastic inaugural season.
