Virginia Beach United (6-4-2) showed up to play Saturday night, July 6th, against Wake FC (3-7-3) in their USL 2 divisional match. VBU breezed past Wake in a 4-1 victory. Donnett Sackie led the way for United with two goals and an assist. He was accompanied by Matthew Ridley and Thomas White who each scored a goal apiece.
The game started off slow as both teams tried to figure out each other’s playstyle. Per usual, VBU settled into the match about midway through the first half and took control of possession and the tempo of the game. Wake had a few chances, but they were few and far between. VBU took advantage of a free kick ten meters outside the box to find their first goal in the 40th minute. Oliver Peters found Sackie on a near post run who was able to volley the ball into the side netting, putting United up a goal going into halftime.
Wake struck first after the break, scoring a header in the 56th minute. However, VBU answered in the 60th minute when Sackie found himself in a 1v1 with Wake’s keeper and was able to slip the ball around the goalie, putting VBU back on top. In the 67th minute, defender Matthew Ridley scored United’s third goal with a fantastic header off of a corner. Thomas White added another goal in the 90th minute, assisted by Sackie, to see out the match.
Saturday nights decisive win was a crucial victory for VBU. Virginia Beach United will be back in action on Tuesday, July 9th, in a home match against Wake FC. United looks to beat Wake for the third time this season and keep their post season dreams alive by earning their fourth straight home victory.
