NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - In a breathtaking game, Virginia Beach United picked up one point on the road against Lionsbridge FC this evening at Pomoco Stadium. The tied crowned Lionsbridge as the champions of the 2019 Coastal Virginia Challenge Cup.

The goals started early in the game when VBU's defense was caught off guard in the 7th minute. Lionsbridge's striker found space on the right to fire a shot that VB United's keeper couldn't save.

However, after the goal, the hosts didn't have many chances, which gave Virginia Beach United the opportunity to get back in the game.

After missing a couple of chances with Gui Leme and Luis Martinez, Oliver Peters played a ball through the defense that deflected on Luis Garza. The deflection put Donnett Sackie on scoring position; the striker did not miss his chance and tied the game 30 minutes into the match.

VBU started controlling the game, but with a long ball played behind it's defense, Lionsbridge's striker managed to tap the ball in as Brett Johnson was coming out, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime.

After the break, Virginia Beach had to find the tying goal again, and they did. Sackie had two 1v1 chances to score within the first five minutes of the second period. He first beat the center back and then left the hosts' keeper on the ground, but lost the angle to shoot.

In his second opportunity, Sackie was rewarded for his efforts. Martinez cheaped the ball over the back line and Sackie just tucked it in on the right-hand side, making it 2-2 only four minutes into the second half.

Both teams had chances to score the winning goal but neither did. With the 2-2 on the scoreboard, VBU collected one point but Lionsbridge FC lifted the trophy due to a goal advantage the team carried before the game started.

Lionsbridge walked away with the CoVA Cup due to the fact that in the previous matches, both teams had beaten each other, but Lionsbridge had scored one more goal than VBU, winning the title in the cup's first year.

Virginia Beach United will be back in action next Monday (July 1st) as they play against Tri-Cities Otters. The game is set for 7:00 PM (ET) at Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
