Before the Whistle: Coastal Virginia Challenge Cup
By Everton Carvalho, 06/24/2019

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. -  After picking up a point on the road, Virginia Beach United will go over to the Virginia Peninsula to face Lionsbridge FC on Wednesday night. The game will define the 2019 CoVa Cup champion.

Who’s on the Other Side?

Lionsbridge FC (5-4-1) is currently the division leader with 16 points. The first two times these teams faced each other, we had two different outcomes. Lionsbridge won the first contest 2-0, playing at Virginia Beach Sportsplex, while VBU won 2-1 playing at the Pomoco Stadium.

The division leaders are also the team with the most goals scored in the league (18). Five of those were scored by Thibaut Jacquel, who also has an assist and is the big name for them. With four assists and three goals in eight games, Luke Brown is another key player that can make the difference.

What Do We Have?

Virginia Beach United’s strongest assets for this game are players who have been showing what they are here for. Gui Leme keeps leading VBU in goals as the Brazilian just picked up another one against the Tri-Cities Otters on Tuesday. Sam Pollard, who has been the leader in assists, had two more in the last game, adding to a total of four, and also scored his first goal of the season.

Another player VBU will be able to count on for this match is Donnett Sackie. The player had scored his first goal of the season against NCFC and found the net once again on Tuesday, avoiding the defeat. Donnett has been putting a lot of effort and taking advantage of the opportunity he’s been given.

What’s at Stake?

Even though Lionsbridge FC is the number one in the South Atlantic Division standings, they are only three points ahead of VBU (4-4-1), and they have played one more game than VB United. Winning on Wednesday can bring VBU up to the first position, depending on other league results.

Besides the three points, both teams are playing for the first CoVa Cup title in history. The Cup represents the rivalry between the USL League teams separated by the Chesapeake Bay. Because of the results in the first two games, Lionsbridge has a goal advantage over VBU, which means a tie will give the hosts the title, but if Virginia Beach United wins, they will be crowned champions of the first Coastal Virginia Challenge Cup. The game is set for 7:00 PM (ET) at Pomoco Stadium.
