Virginia Beach United (4-4-1) and the Tri-Cities Otters (4-1-3) faced off in a USL 2 match Saturday evening which concluded in exciting fashion. The game was a nail biter that came down to the very last minute to end in a 3-3 draw.
VBU came out strong in the first half and put the pressure on the Otters for the first 45 minutes. VBU opened up the scoring early when Gui Leme connected with the ball off a cross to put away the first goal for United. The second goal for VBU came soon after in the 18th minute in the form of an own goal by the Otters. In the 28th minute, VBU keeper Brett Johnson made a tremendous save to deny the Otter’s the best chance they saw in the first half. At halftime, VBU was up 2-0.
The Tri-Cities Otters came out of the locker room ready to play. They earned their first goal in the 46th minute to find their way into the match. Later in the half, the Otters found the back of the net again to even the score at 2-2. As the final few minutes of the game were ticking away, the Otters were able to find a goal in the 90th minute when their forward dribbled past the VBU defense and keeper to score and put the Otters up 2-3. With such a late goal and only 3 minutes of added time, one would think the game was all but lost. In a situation when most teams would accept defeat, VBU responded with a goal immediately after being scored on. VBU’s Donnett scored the tying goal with a header off of a cross from Sam Pollard.
