Virginia Beach United earned a 3-2 win against NC Fusion U23 in USL 2 conference play during VBU’s fifth home game.
Virginia Beach United earned a 3-2 win against NC Fusion U23 in USL 2 conference play during VBU’s fifth home game. VBU highlighted the night with an excellent defensive showing led by keeper Oliver Padilla, and three seperate goal scorers: Daniel Corona, Pato Aguilera and Gui Leme.
VBU showed off their defensive prowess in the first 15 minutes of the match. NC Fusion had most of the possession throughout the first 15 minutes with attacks through the middle and over the top; VBU matched all of Fusion’s attacks with excellent defense. VBU keeper Oliver Padilla led the way with several saves in the first half. Oliver was backed up by the rest of his team who made a handful of off the line saves, one of which came from Aidan Dayton in the 13th minute when he blocked a shot from a corner kick which was sure to score if he wasn’t there to make the sliding save.
VBU found their way into the game in the 30th minute with a goal scored by Daniel Corona. However, Fusion would find the back of the net right before the end of the first half off of a corner.
The second half started with several quality chances for VBU by both Daniel Corona and Gui Leme, however Fusion’s keeper was there to make the saves. Fusion would open the scoring in the second half with a volley in the 60th minute by Nick Spielman. However, VBU refused to be outdone at home and responded with two goals off of set pieces. The first coming in the 75th minute from a free kick by Pato Aguilera and the winning goal being scored by Gui Leme off a free kick in extra time.
Virginia Beach United improves to 4-3-0 after Saturday night’s win and will move up in the standings after defeating the table leaders, NC Fusion U23. They will face NC Fusion U23 again in their very next match on Tuesday, June 18th, at WMSP stadium in North Carolina.
